Matt and I had the privilege of visiting a Cigar Factory in the small town of Danli, about two hours outside of Tegucigalpa. The Plasencia Factory is managed by a Cuban American who has lived in Honduras for the past 12 years. All the work done at the factory is completely by hand. Everything from separating the tobacco leaves, to rolling them, putting them in individual plastic wrappers, putting the labels on the cigars, and placing them in the cigar boxes. The factory has 3,000 employees, one worker's salary can easily take care of a family of 5. This factory produces over 30 million cigars per year. The workers are paid on the number of cigars they make, the average for one employee is about 300 cigars per day. Being there reminded me of the "I Love Lucy" episode where Lucy visits Ricky's uncle's cigar factory.
