Lenca Pottery is made completely from nature’s own materials and the work is shared by the men and women from the youngest to the oldest. The men help with chopping firewood and hauling mud from remote areas to the working areas and the women do all the molding, cooking, designing, and polishing. After collecting the mud it goes through a 3 step refining process. It is mixed with water and molded into clay.
It is then ready for shaping and design, the only tools used in the entire process is dried corn husks, stones, and twigs.
After shaping and forming the pieces by hand they are placed in a large oven at a very high temperature. She is holding the piece in her hand that has already been cooked.
After the pieces cool, the white color is ready to be applied. A special mixture (they gray stuff you see) using a secret formula is applied to bring out the white in each piece.
Then the pieces are put on an open fire burning different types of leaves to get the final color. The next steps are to clean the off the relief layer and then it will be polished. The pieces are then buffed with stones and then baked again.
This is the final product.
